Since joining the World Trade Organisation in January 2007, Vietnam’s economic growth has increased dramatically. In recent years, the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has consistently hovered at around the 8% mark, with Foreign Direct Invetments (FDI) in 2007 hitting its highest level in 20 years.

Vietnam’s robust economic growth is accompanied with an urgent need for good transportation networks and infrastructure. Major projects are underway to build more ports, highways, railways, roads, bridges, tunnels, interchanges, overpasses, car parks and other auxiliary facilities.

Other examples of large-scale projects underway include:

  • Building 6,000 km of expressways by 2025, an estimated 261 km of expressways designed for high-speed travel will be built each year until 2025 at an estimated total cost of US$22.8 billion.
  • Ho Chi Minh city – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway
Length of the Project: 54.9 Km. Project involves placing a viaduct from Ring road II intersection (km5+564) to Tac river (km10+751). Other facilities to be built include petrol filling stations, service areas, and telephone points etc. Estimation of total cost: 600 million US dollars.
  • Building of 6 urban subways in Hanoi, 128.9 km in length at the cost of US$2.25 billion and to be completed by 2020. Project partially funded by World Bank.
  • Construction of four metropolitan belt roads in Hanoi with a total length of about 290 km, including 12 bridges across the Red River and traffic knot extensions.
  • Hanoi’s total investment into transportation projects is estimated at about US$13 billion.
  • A Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City high-speed railway of 1,630km at an estimated cost of US$33 billion. The Hanoi – Vinh, Nha Trang – HCM City segments and the railway in the central region will be done first. The railway, once operational, will allow trains to run at the speed of 300-350km/h.
